This cup features a part of the famous Japanese Scrolls of Frolicking Animals. The scroll was originally a 12 inch hand scroll illustrated in ink. It is part of a set of four scrolls that have become one of Japan's most significant and widely featured traditional pieces of art. The drawings became popular in the Heian period, in which animals were humanized and portrayed in a very playful manner to mock humans.
